Why a shell prompt earns attention from developers

A dark shell tells a technical reader that the post was written by somebody who works, not by a social media agency. That judgement happens before the first word is read, and it decides whether the swipe happens at all.

The scrollback carries memory for free. Because the previous commands stay visible, slide six still shows how you got there, and a reader who joined late can catch up without swiping back.

Writing steps that read like real commands

Use the command as the headline and the explanation as the line under it. Real flags, real file names and real output beat invented ones every time, because an audience that lives in a terminal spots a fake instantly.

Keep one command per slide. A slide with four chained commands is a screenshot, and screenshots are illegible in a feed. If a step genuinely needs three commands, it is really three slides.

Errors are good content here. A failing command on one slide and the fix on the next is the most shared shape this template produces, because it matches how the work actually went.

Before you export

Paste commands you have actually run. Invented flags get corrected in the replies.
Trim long paths so the command fits on one line at feed size.
Let one slide fail and fix it on the next. The recovery is the interesting part.
Keep the accent for the prompt and one highlight, not for the whole output.
