Why the sticky note look stops a scroll

Most branded carousels look like each other. Flat colour, grid layout, tidy sans serif, all of it correct and all of it invisible. A note stuck on a surface breaks that pattern, and pattern breaks are what actually stop a thumb.

It sets the right expectation too. A sticky note promises something short, so people start it expecting a quick payoff and they finish it. Finished carousels get shown to more people.

The format is also honest about being informal, which is oddly freeing. You can post a half formed thought, a rough list, or a mistake you made without it looking sloppy, so posting consistently gets a lot cheaper.

What to write on the notes

One note, one thought. Try to fit a paragraph on a square of paper and the whole thing falls apart, and a crowded note is illegible at feed size anyway. A headline of a few words plus one short line underneath is the shape that works.

Lists do best here: mistakes, reminders, things you stopped doing, questions to ask before publishing. If you would genuinely scribble it down, it belongs on a note. If it needs a chart, it does not.

Use colour as meaning instead of decoration. If yellow is the idea and red is the warning, keep that consistent for the whole deck and readers pick up the code by slide three without being told.

Which platforms sticky note carousels suit

Keep 4:5 portrait for Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Threads so the notes stay large in the feed. Switch to 9:16 for a TikTok photo carousel, where the notes get more room and the layout still holds.

It fits behind the scenes posts and lessons learned especially well, because the medium matches the message. It fits pricing, data and formal announcements badly. Use a cleaner template for those.

Before you export

  • Keep each note to a headline plus one short line. Crowded notes stop being readable at feed size.
  • Reuse two or three note colours across the deck instead of picking a new one per slide.
  • Open with the note that states the problem and close with the note that asks for one thing.
  • Check the deck at thumbnail size. If the first note is unreadable small, write it shorter.
