The straightforward reason is that the platform does not own the post. The photo or video belongs to whoever made it, so an app that put a save button on every post would be handing out other people's work on their behalf. Most of them sidestep that by leaving the button off and letting you keep your own uploads through the creator tools instead.

Where a save button does exist it usually comes with a mark on it. TikTok is the familiar one: the download works, and the file arrives with a watermark and the username burned into the picture. That is fair enough as attribution, but it travels with the file, so the clip shows up branded wherever you put it next.

Either way, the file itself is not hidden. A public post is a public page, and the photo or video on it is a normal file your browser already fetched to show you. Pasting the link here reads that same page and hands you the file instead of drawing it on a screen. If a post does not open for a stranger in a browser, no tool can reach it, and one that says otherwise is asking for your password.

What you see in a feed is rarely the original. Platforms make several renditions of every upload and show you a small one, because a scrolling feed is mostly bandwidth. Pinterest is the clearest case: the picture on a Pin page is a resized preview, and the original behind it is often several times larger and sometimes a different format, which is what this tool reaches for.

Some things are not one file at all. A Snapchat Story is a sequence of separate snaps, so a Story link gives you a list rather than a single video, and each snap comes down on its own. A Bluesky post can carry four photos, and each of those is its own upload at its own resolution.

And some of it has a clock on it. A Snapchat Story is gone after 24 hours, and once it expires Snapchat has nothing left to give you. If a story matters, saving it while it is up is the only version of that plan that works.
