Rough on purpose gets a different kind of reply

A polished slide invites judgement. A napkin invites a conversation, because it says the thinking is still in progress and there is room for somebody else in it.

That makes this the template for early ideas: the pitch you have not built, the model you are testing, the thing you sketched for a friend. Comments come back as suggestions rather than critiques.

Keeping a napkin believable

Short phrases, not sentences. Nobody writes paragraphs on a napkin, so a slide with tidy body copy immediately looks staged. Write the way a marker forces you to write.

One idea per napkin, and let the deck build the argument across slides. The coffee ring and the marker weight do the styling, so resist adding structure the napkin would not have.

Write in fragments. Full sentences on a napkin look fake.
Sketch one idea per slide and let the deck do the building.
Use it for ideas in progress, not for finished announcements.
