Building a chart beats showing one

A finished chart asks the reader to interpret it alone, and most people decline. Adding one bar per slide means each number arrives with its own sentence of context, which is the difference between data and a story.

It also gives you control over the order. Put the surprising bar last and the deck has an ending, which a static chart can never have because everything is visible at once.

Numbers that carry a deck

Comparisons work best: months, channels, tools, before and after a change, results across a team. Five to eight bars is plenty, since a phone screen cannot label more than that legibly.

Round the numbers and label the axis in words a reader recognises. Precision to two decimals reads as a spreadsheet export rather than a point somebody wanted to make.

Before you export

Give every bar one sentence of context on its own slide.
Round the numbers. Decimals make a chart look copied out of a spreadsheet.
Keep five to eight bars so the labels stay readable on a phone.
Save the bar that surprised you for the last slide.
