The 500 limit is measured in bytes

Threads allows 500, but it counts UTF-8 bytes rather than what you would call characters. A plain letter is one byte. An emoji is usually four. So twenty emoji cost eighty of your five hundred, and an accented or non-Latin alphabet costs two per letter.

You feel this most in a post that looked comfortably short and then would not send. The previewer counts the same way Threads does, so the number in front of you is the real one.

Media, links and the shape of the card

One attachment keeps its own aspect ratio. Several become a carousel you drag sideways, up to 20 items. The card is narrower than X’s, so text wraps sooner, and a long display name plus a long handle can push the header onto its own line.

Threads builds a link preview from the first URL in the post, so if the link is the point, put it first. Hashtags work differently here too: Threads uses one topic tag rather than a pile of them, capped at 50 characters.

Before you publish

Budget four bytes per emoji against the 500 limit.
Put the URL you want previewed first. Threads builds the card from the first link.
One topic tag, not a wall of hashtags. Threads is built around a single tag per post.
Check the wrap. The Threads card is narrower than X, so the same sentence breaks in a different place.
