Instagram Reels safe zone checker

The Instagram Reels safe zone is the part of a 1080x1920 frame that Instagram’s interface does not sit on. Drop your video in with the caption you plan to use and the preview draws that interface where Instagram draws it, so you can see what is covered instead of measuring against a template.

What actually covers a Reel

The bottom band is the expensive one. Your account name, the caption, the audio ticker, the follow button and the playback progress bar all live there, and on an ad so does the call to action. Meta’s retired guidance put it at the bottom 35%, which on a 1920px canvas is about 670px. That is a third of your frame gone before you start.

The one figure Meta still publishes is stricter: Reels ads carrying disclaimers should keep the bottom 40% clear of text, logos and key creative. It is the only number left on Meta’s live safe zone page, and it is worth treating as the real floor.

The top band holds the status bar, the Reels header and the camera icon, roughly the top 14%. The right edge carries the action rail with like, comment, share, save and the spinning audio disc. Meta has never published a width for that rail, so any figure you see for it is somebody’s measurement rather than a spec.

The caption is part of the overlay

A Reel caption is not printed beside your video, it is printed on it. Instagram shows roughly the first line and a bit before the "more" link, and each line it wraps to climbs further up your frame. Write a long opening sentence and you have moved the safe zone yourself.

This is exactly what a downloaded template cannot do. The PNG you overlay in your editor assumes some average caption. The preview here uses yours.

Ratio, crops and the profile grid

Export at 1080x1920. Meta handles anything else in one of two ways on taller phones: it zooms your creative, which can crop content that was inside the safe zone, or it shows it at 9:16 against a black background. You do not get to pick which one happens.

The grid is a separate problem. Instagram moved profile thumbnails to portrait in 2025, so the crop your Reel gets on your own profile is not the square that older templates were built around. If the cover frame matters, check it as a portrait crop.

Before you publish

  • Keep the bottom 40% clear. That is Meta’s own published figure for Reels ads with disclaimers and the safest line to hold for organic posts too.
  • Put subtitles above the caption band, not inside it. Burned-in captions at the bottom of the frame are the most common thing to lose.
  • Leave the right edge clear for the action rail. Meta publishes no width for it, so give it more room than a template suggests.
  • Preview with the real caption. Every line it wraps to eats further into the frame.

The area of the 1080x1920 frame that Instagram’s interface does not cover. In practice that means avoiding roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% to 40%, and the right edge where the like, comment, share and save buttons sit.
At least 35%, and 40% if there is a disclaimer, which is the figure Meta still publishes for Reels ads. The caption, audio row, follow button and progress bar all share that band, and a longer caption pushes it higher.
1080x1920, a 9:16 canvas. Instagram accepts other ratios through its API but the feed either zooms them, which can crop what you thought was safe, or pads them against black.
Only roughly. The pixel numbers in circulation come from a Meta ads guide that is no longer publicly reachable, and they disagree with the percentages quoted alongside them: 14% of 1920px is 269px, not the 250px usually printed. Meta replaced the numbers with an overlay tool in Ads Manager instead.
Yes. The caption is drawn over the video, so every extra line it wraps to covers more of the frame. That is why checking with your own caption beats overlaying a fixed template image.

— me 👋

Hi, I'm Alexandro 👋

I left my Software Engineer role at Amazon to build tools that solve real problems — the kind big companies ignore because they read spreadsheets instead of using their own products.

I was spending over an hour daily just scheduling 2 shorts across 3 platforms — logging in, reformatting, uploading one by one. That felt broken. So I built PublishQPublishQ . Now I create 4 shorts in 3 minutes and schedule them to 4 platforms in under 30 seconds.

PublishQ is bootstrapped. No investors, no vanity metrics. I build what actually helps you — because I use it every day myself.

Thank you,

Alexandro
