A Bluesky post previewer draws your post as the app does: the display name and the domain handle, your text, the image grid, and the reply, repost and like row. Bluesky’s limit is 300 and it is counted in bytes, so the previewer counts it that way too.

Bluesky allows 300 and counts UTF-8 bytes, so emoji cost four each and non-Latin letters cost two. The useful part is that a thread gives every post its own 300, so the answer to a long idea on Bluesky is more posts rather than fewer words.
Images are capped at four per post, and each one has a size ceiling of about 1 MB, which is low. A photo straight off a phone is usually several times that, so it has to be compressed on the way in.
The handle is a domain, and it takes up room
A Bluesky handle is a domain name, so it is long and it cannot be broken across lines. Together with a display name it makes the header the widest single row in the card, which is why a Bluesky post squeezed into a narrow column truncates the name before anything else.
The image grid behaves like X’s: one image keeps its shape, two or more go into tiles that crop from the centre. A single video is letterboxed inside a black canvas rather than left-aligned, so a vertical clip gets bands either side instead of sitting off to one edge.
Before you publish
- Count four bytes per emoji against the 300.
- Split long thoughts into a thread. Each post gets its own 300 bytes.
- Compress images before uploading. The per image ceiling is around 1 MB.
- Four images maximum, and anything beyond the first is cropped into a tile.
