Social media safe zone checker

A safe zone is the part of a full screen vertical post that the app’s own interface does not cover. This checker shows it the direct way: drop in your image or video, type the caption you plan to use, and look at where the username, caption, buttons and progress bar land on your own frame.

Why the safe zone templates you downloaded are guesses

Nobody publishes the numbers any more. Meta took its pixel guidance down and replaced it with a yellow overlay inside Ads Manager, and the only figure left on its live safe zone page is that Reels ads with disclaimers should keep the bottom 40% clear. TikTok gives you ZIP files of overlay images rather than a table. Google publishes nothing for Shorts.

The numbers still circulating come from a Meta ads guide that now returns a login wall, and they contradict themselves. That guide said the top 14% or 250px, but 14% of a 1920px canvas is 269px. It said the bottom 20% or 340px for Stories, and 20% of 1920 is 384px. Those two sentences cannot both be true, which tells you what kind of precision was on offer even when the page was live.

TikTok is the most honest about it: its help page says the safe zone depends on the dimensions, the caption length and any extra formats in use, that a longer caption means a smaller safe zone, and that the overlay may not cover every device. A fixed PNG cannot express any of that.

What to check instead

The interface is drawn from your post, so preview the post. Your caption is the part that moves: on TikTok it wraps up to four lines over your video, and on a Reel it sits in the same band as the audio row and the follow button. Type the real caption, not a placeholder, and the covered area is the real one.

Then look at the ratio. Meta zooms creative that is not 9:16, which can crop outside the safe zone, or shows it at 9:16 on a black background, and you do not get to choose which. YouTube does something different again: a horizontal video in the Shorts feed gets a blurred copy of your own frame above and below rather than clean black bars.

The formats below each have their own interface and their own caption rules, so each one gets its own page and its own checker. Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories are the two with no caption field at all, which makes their bottom band interface only and therefore the most predictable of the set.

Before you publish

  • Use the caption you are actually going to post. On TikTok and Reels the caption is part of the overlay, so a placeholder gives you a smaller covered area than the real thing.
  • Export at 1080x1920. Anything that is not 9:16 gets zoomed or padded, and you do not control which.
  • Keep logos out of both the top and the bottom bands. The top carries the status bar and the account row, the bottom carries the caption and the buttons.
  • Check on a real frame from your video, not a title card. The covered area matters most where your subject is.

Everything you need to know about Social media safe zone checker from PublishQ

It is the area of a full screen vertical post that the app’s own interface leaves alone. The username, caption, action buttons, progress bar and system status bar are all drawn on top of your media, so anything you place under them is hidden or cropped.
Upload it here with the caption you plan to use and pick the format you are posting. The preview renders the platform’s real interface over your frame, so you can see what is covered rather than measuring against a template image.
They are approximations. The pixel figures they use trace back to a Meta ads guide that is no longer public, and those figures disagree with the percentages printed next to them. TikTok also states that the safe zone changes with caption length and device, which no fixed template can represent.
1080x1920, which is 9:16. Instagram Reels and Stories, Facebook Stories, TikTok and YouTube Shorts all use that canvas. Anything else is zoomed, padded or, on Shorts, given blurred bands made from your own frame.
On TikTok, yes, and TikTok says so on its own help page. The caption sits over the video and wraps up to four lines, so each extra line covers more of the frame. Reels behave the same way. Stories have no caption at all, so they do not move.

— me 👋

Hi, I'm Alexandro 👋

I left my Software Engineer role at Amazon to build tools that solve real problems — the kind big companies ignore because they read spreadsheets instead of using their own products.

I was spending over an hour daily just scheduling 2 shorts across 3 platforms — logging in, reformatting, uploading one by one. That felt broken. So I built PublishQPublishQ . Now I create 4 shorts in 3 minutes and schedule them to 4 platforms in under 30 seconds.

PublishQ is bootstrapped. No investors, no vanity metrics. I build what actually helps you — because I use it every day myself.

Thank you,

Alexandro
