Facebook Reels safe zone checker
Every video you post to a Facebook Page is a Reel, whatever length or shape it is, so it gets the full screen player and the interface that comes with it. Drop the video in with your caption and the preview puts Facebook’s own overlays on your frame.

You did not choose the Reel, Facebook did
Facebook folded its video formats together, so a single video upload is a Reel regardless of its length, its orientation or what you had in mind. There is no separate video post to fall back on and no setting that opts out. Whatever you upload is going into a vertical player with a caption, a sound row and a follow button drawn on top of it.
Which is a problem mostly for landscape footage. A 16:9 edit fitted into a 9:16 player leaves your actual picture occupying the middle band of the screen while the interface stays exactly where it always is, so proportionally it covers far more of what the viewer can see. Reframing to vertical is the fix, and the preview is where you find out you need to.
Length is not the constraint here. Facebook puts no duration cap on a Reel and takes up to 4 GB, which makes it the loosest of the vertical formats. That is worth knowing before you cut a video down to fit a limit that only exists on other platforms.
Where the overlays sit, and what Meta will admit to
Meta’s live safe zone page covers Stories, Reels, Feed and in-stream reels together, and the single figure it still commits to is that a Reels ad carrying a disclaimer should keep the bottom 40% clear. Treat that as the working number for organic Reels too. It is more than any Story asks for, because a Story has no caption and a Reel does.
Above that band sit the Page name, the caption, the audio attribution and the follow button, with the playback bar along the very bottom edge. Down the right runs the reaction and share column. Along the top there is the status bar and the player chrome, which the retired guidance put at around a seventh of the frame.
Nothing in that paragraph is published as a pixel table for Facebook Reels specifically. Meta groups the placement with the others and stopped shipping numbers, so measuring against a downloaded PNG is measuring against somebody’s guess at a shared approximation.
Before you publish
- Reframe landscape footage to 9:16 before you upload. It becomes a Reel either way, and a fitted 16:9 clip loses more of its picture to the interface than a vertical one does.
- Hold the bottom 40% clear, which is the one figure Meta still stands behind for Reels.
- Keep the caption short. It sits over the video and climbs the frame line by line.
- There is no duration cap on a Facebook Reel, so cut for the story rather than for a limit.

— me 👋
Hi, I'm Alexandro 👋
I left my Software Engineer role at Amazon to build tools that solve real problems — the kind big companies ignore because they read spreadsheets instead of using their own products.
I was spending over an hour daily just scheduling 2 shorts across 3 platforms — logging in, reformatting, uploading one by one. That felt broken. So I built PublishQ . Now I create 4 shorts in 3 minutes and schedule them to 4 platforms in under 30 seconds.
PublishQ is bootstrapped. No investors, no vanity metrics. I build what actually helps you — because I use it every day myself.
Thank you,
Alexandro
