TikTok safe zone checker
The TikTok safe zone is the part of a 9:16 video that the app’s interface does not cover. TikTok does not publish it as a set of numbers, and it says the area changes with your caption, so the way to check it is to put your own video and your own caption behind the real interface.

TikTok will not give you a number, on purpose
TikTok publishes safe zones as downloadable overlay images rather than as a table, and its help page explains why: the region depends on the dimensions, the caption length and any extra formats in use, and the overlay may not cover every device. It also says plainly that the longer the caption, the smaller the safe zone.
So every pixel figure you find for TikTok is somebody’s measurement of one of those overlays. That is not useless, but it is not a spec, and it goes stale whenever TikTok moves an element. Checking your own frame sidesteps the whole question.
The caption is the moving part
A caption can be 2,200 characters and the feed shows four lines before "See more". Four lines is a lot of vertical space over your footage. TikTok’s own recommendation is to stay at or under 100 characters, which keeps it to one or two lines.
Emoji count as two characters, and how many characters fit on a line depends on the device, so the wrap point is not fixed either. If burned-in text near the bottom of your frame matters to you, the caption is the thing that will cover it.
The right edge carries the action rail: the avatar with its follow badge, like, comment, bookmark, share and the spinning album art. The bottom left carries the account name, the caption and the sound ticker, and any anchor or interactive add-on sits above the app’s own navigation bar.
Ratio and quality
Shoot and export 9:16 at 1080x1920. TikTok accepts down to 540x960 but there is no reason to give away resolution. A non-vertical clip is fitted into the vertical player, so a landscape video ends up small in the middle of the screen with the whole interface still drawn over it.
One more thing worth knowing if you also run ads: TikTok says the in-feed safe zone is more restrictive than the open screen, and a TopView ad plays full screen for the first three seconds before re-adapting to the in-feed area. A static template cannot show that either.
Before you publish
- Keep the caption at or under 100 characters. That is TikTok’s own advice and it keeps the caption to one or two lines over your video.
- Leave the bottom third clear. The caption, the account name and the sound ticker all share it, and the app navigation bar sits under them.
- Leave the right edge clear for the action rail, including the spinning album art at the bottom of it.
- Preview with the caption you will post. TikTok states outright that a longer caption means a smaller safe zone.

— me 👋
Hi, I'm Alexandro 👋
I left my Software Engineer role at Amazon to build tools that solve real problems — the kind big companies ignore because they read spreadsheets instead of using their own products.
I was spending over an hour daily just scheduling 2 shorts across 3 platforms — logging in, reformatting, uploading one by one. That felt broken. So I built PublishQ . Now I create 4 shorts in 3 minutes and schedule them to 4 platforms in under 30 seconds.
PublishQ is bootstrapped. No investors, no vanity metrics. I build what actually helps you — because I use it every day myself.
Thank you,
Alexandro
