Instagram Stories safe zone checker
The Instagram Stories safe zone is the middle of a 1080x1920 frame, between the progress bars and profile row at the top and the reply field at the bottom. Upload the image or video you plan to post and the preview shows exactly where those elements land on it.

A Story has no caption, which makes it predictable
This is the one format in the set where nothing you type changes the layout. Instagram Stories publish no caption text at all, so the bottom band is interface only: the reply field, the like and the share affordance, plus the call to action on an ad. It does not grow because you wrote more.
The trade is that anything you want read has to be inside the image or the video. There is no text field to fall back on, so the words are part of the design and the safe zone is a design constraint rather than a copy one.
The two bands, and where the numbers come from
The top carries the status bar, the segmented progress bars, your profile picture, the account name, the timestamp and the menu and close controls. Meta’s retired figure was the top 14%, quoted as 250px, although 14% of 1920px is 269px. Take the larger one.
The bottom carries the reply field and the reaction controls, retired as the bottom 20% or 340px, where 20% of 1920px is 384px. Again, take the larger one. Meta itself no longer publishes either figure. It ships a safe zone guardrail overlay inside Ads Manager instead, which is a tacit admission that a number on a page was not doing the job.
The sides lose about 6% each on phones taller and narrower than 9:16. That is edge loss from the crop rather than an interface element, so it applies even to a Story with nothing on screen but your photo.
Before you publish
- Design inside the middle 60% vertically. It costs you height and it survives every device.
- Keep stickers and links out of the top strip. The progress bars sit there and they multiply with each story in the tray.
- Burn the words into the image. Stories publish no caption, so text in the composer does not travel with the post.
- Pull key content 60px in from each side. Taller phones crop the edges of a 9:16 frame.

— me 👋
Hi, I'm Alexandro 👋
I left my Software Engineer role at Amazon to build tools that solve real problems — the kind big companies ignore because they read spreadsheets instead of using their own products.
I was spending over an hour daily just scheduling 2 shorts across 3 platforms — logging in, reformatting, uploading one by one. That felt broken. So I built PublishQ . Now I create 4 shorts in 3 minutes and schedule them to 4 platforms in under 30 seconds.
PublishQ is bootstrapped. No investors, no vanity metrics. I build what actually helps you — because I use it every day myself.
Thank you,
Alexandro
